Rahsaan Patterson

Wines & Spirits

Artistry Music

There seems to be a lot of talk about some of today’s artists who keep the spirit of yesteryear’s soul music alive in there music. Rahsaan Patterson sets a level so high for artistry that he has few if any, contemporaries. Rahsaan’s original sound has the funk of Parliament, The sensitivity of Stevie and the depth of Hataway. Not since the soul greats of the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s has anyone done it better than Rahsaan. With more than a decade of setting the modern soul scene on fire Rahsaan drops his 4th project ‘Wine & Spirits’. ‘Wines & Spirits’ is a soul rocking joy ride lead but the modern legend. On Wine & Spirits Rahsaan digs deeper and displays another side of his sound like in tracks like Pitch Black. Rahsaan’s extraordinary vocals and writing talents allows him to traverses the lines of Soul, R&B, Jazz, Funk, & Rock. There is no other voice and no other groove like that of Rahsaan Patterson. Marcell and the Truth Hopes Too High Being a child of the 70’s one tends to yearn for the musical era when there were bands and music can get you to dance and uplift your spirit. Hope Too High brings renewed hope for those of us who love that band sound. Marcell and the Truth take a mix of Jazz, soul and blues and create a sound so rich that you can swear they studied the sound of Frankie Beverly and Maze and The Whispers. What is so wonderful about the Hopes too high is the simplicity of the arrangements; this simplicity leaves room for the listener to get into the infectious grooves on Hope Too High. Opening track ‘Never Leave You Lonely’ sets the tone as a bouncy uplifting dance track. ‘Breath Love’ is the marriage of a simple melody made all the more beautiful by incredible lyrics and vocal arrangements. ‘Maybe I’m not the man’ takes a hip-hop swagger and old school flow to create a sound so familiar yet totally new. The music industry has be a mono-artistic atmosphere where the collective sound of bands has become UK imports like Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies and Incognito; thankfully we now have a home grown treasure; Marcell and The Truth is a band too damn good for their own good. If you loved The Whispers, Frankie Beverly and Maze then Marcell and the Truth has a place in your musical library.

Maya Azucena ~ Junkyard Jewel www.Junkyardjewel.com Junkyard Jewel is an 11 track love letter to life. Maya takes an acoustic turn; and silences all her doubters and takes her place up front with musical greatness. Junkyard Jewel is an acoustic treasure that blurs the lines of genre; folksy at moments and jazzy at others. Hallelujah is one of a few tracks that will bring a tear to your eye because of its sincerity and beauty. Like her debut her voice has a power that can blow out you speakers but the power is not just in volume but also in emotion. On Junkyard Jewel eloquent lyrics are partnered with a stripped down set; giving this album a pure/natural quality. Mostly new material and a acoustic versions of tracks from her debut this will surely move even the most critical of music lovers. No collection should be without it no matter what your taste in music. There is something for everyone on Junkyard Jewel.

Sophia Darcell ~ Soul Eclectic Soul Eclectic is a delightful tapestry of downtempo and midtempo souljazz grooves. I always said that a downtempo and/or midtempo album is the hardest to make because the artist have to keep the listener interested. The combination of Sophia Darcell warm vocals and the musicianship of the band makes for an shining example of what sophisticated soul is suppose to sound like. This band is continuing the tradition started by such great bands Incognito, Fertile Ground, and The Rebirth. Sophia Darcell’s Soul Eclectic has that warm hypnotic groove that will grab hold and not let go. AyeJay (Da’ Muzik Hunta’) Spraggins Ebony Evans ~ Luv’s Fire Luv’s Fire is a great collection of songs with that late 70’s sound to it. Ebony’s voice has both the power of experience and the sound of innocence. Luv’s Fire is what R&B could have become. Title track “Luv’s Fire” is the perfect summer cookout song. Ebony opens her heart on the midtempo “Yes I Do”. “Loving you is all I wanna do” is a groovy head nodder. 70’s Blue note style groove is the midtempo beat of “You happened to me”. The Jazzy-soul instrumentation is the perfect fit for Ebony’s fresh talent. This album is worth a listen. No filler tracks on this one.

Anthony David ~ the Red Clay Chronicles The arrival of Anthony David’s Red Clay Chronicles is the blueprint for true purpose of the independent movement for innovation and originality. Anthony David’s Red Clay Chronicles redefines musical mastery and vocal genius. Red Clay blurs the lines between R&B and Soul. Innovation is the perfect adjective to describe all the shades of soulful grooves on Red Clay Chronicles. Red Clay Chronicles is a modern day Masterpiece, one not to be missed! Brown Baby Girl ~ Brown Baby Girl....
There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe this breakthrough album Brown Baby Girl is the collaboration of talented Jamie Finegan and the lovely Lorenda Robinson. This is a musical fusion that has to be heard to be believed. This album has no set genre to it; at times its jazzy and then funky, groovy but always soulful.
Jamie is the consummate musician. Jamie composes, arranges, and plays trumpet and piano. Lorenda is the beautiful, charismatic vocal stylist who voice has a presence that demands attention and can sooth the soul.
Brown Baby Girl is a collection of jazzy, funky, mellow soul gems. Lorenda’s voice is an instrument within Jamie’s arrangements. The core sound of the album is that of the best of the softer sides of acid jazz. Lorenda really lays it down vocally on this album. BBG is like setting Gwendolyn brooks and Nikki Giovanni to the groovy sounds of Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and the Crusaders. A modern classic!

TN’T (Trish & Tom) Something Good Once I reached the last track there is no doubt in my mind that TN’T has toned their craft to create something really good. Refreshing, innovative and heartfelt are a few adjectives to describe this sophomore project. “Something Good” sparks with the energy present in music in the 80’s when experimentation allowed for many new elements to become part of R&B. It would not be far to pigeonhole TN’T with the label of R&B, the sound of TN’T is a mix of 80’s soul-funk, present day hip-hop swagger and spacey groove. TN’T are soulmates whose love for each other and music is evident in their music. Unlike so many other indie artists TN’T has the ability to lay down tracks all with there own sound and style but still maintain continuity. If you’re looking for the feel good album of the fall with lots of funk and love then “Something Good” is something worth having. Highly Recommended.
